Mid Century Modern Bedroom Suite – Before & After

I feel like this post has been a long time coming.   A sweet neighbor gave me an incredible deal on  a set of mid century modern bedroom furniture, and it has been sitting in my garage for over a year.  (Apologies, but you’ll have to look at some ugly phone pictures before we get to the pretty!)

Before: B. P. John Furniture, designed by Randolph Mohlhenrich of Portland, Oregon

Italian Provincial Collection manufactured by B.P. John Corp. of Portland, OR; designed by Randolph Mohlhenrich

I originally started spraying the furniture on the first warm day in May.   Then we went on vacation, and our bathroom renovation started.   Needless to say, the huge dresser and two nightstands got blocked in behind a huge bathtub and cabinets and piles of demo rubbish.

By the time I could physically reach it, I basically had to start over.   I guess it wasn’t obvious to everyone that this was a work in progress.  My 90% finished furniture was not in my garage to be a landing pad for tools and tiles.   Was I disappointed?  Absolutely.  This is some seriously heavy furniture to get to and from my “spray booth”, which as you can see, is my backyard.   I considered stripping the paint off the tops, sticking a fork in it and calling it done, but my daughter decided she wanted the furniture.   And she wanted all white furniture.  Did I mention that I have to go down a flight of stairs to reach my “booth”?!  (It was probably a good thing those workers didn’t show up that day!)  :/   As Tim Gunn would say, “Make it work”  …

As with all my furniture makeovers, the first thing I did was give the furniture a good cleaning with TSP Substitute.   And because the furniture was fairly slick, I gave it a quick scuff coat with 220 grit sandpaper after I had filled in some of the scratches and dents.   As I’ve mentioned in plenty of posts, I’m pretty smitten with my HomeRight Finish Max, and that’s what I used to prime and paint this furniture.  Yes, I did prime these pieces.  Typically I use furniture specific paint and can skip this step, but I was spraying with Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel in High Gloss, and priming was recommended.  The silver lining is that this paint does not require a top coat.  😀

Good thing that new bathtub is so huge.   My muscles could use a good soak after all that heavy lifting!  But it was all worth it in the end.  Isn’t it pretty??!

It there’s one combo I enjoy more than black and gold, it’s white and gold!  It’s so fresh and modern.  Just perfect for a teenage girl.  The lamp is new, as well.  We found it at Target, and can you believe it was less than $40?

Obviously we have to talk about this gorgeous hardware!   It was also given a makeover with Country Chic’s Metallic Cream in Pocket Watch.

The hardware didn’t clean up like I had hoped it would, but the Metallic Cream gave it the shine I was looking for.

And, yes, those are portraits of my babies when they were wee little ones.  Oh what I would give to be able to kiss those sweet little hands again!!

And no, they’re not normally on my daughter’s dresser.  It just didn’t feel right to photograph her personal belongings.

That’s why I also flipped her book titles.  😉   FYI:  The tray and Good Luck Kitty were garage sale finds that also got an enamel spraying (but from a can), and the flower pot was also painted with Country Chic’s metallic cream in Pocket Watch.  The terracotta warriors are from our trip to China, and the beautiful tabby is our beloved cat, Atticus, who is no longer with us.

If you’ve been a reader for a while, you’ll know that the pillows and stuffed animals are my daughter’s creations.   So proud of my talented girl!

I don’t pretend to be an expert on anything, but if you have any questions regarding the sprayer I use, I’m happy to assist to the best of my ability.   Thanks so much for stopping by today!  Take care, Cynthia

  2. This is spectacular. It has a gorgeous high end and sophisticated look that I am drawn to. So much cooler than new pieces that don’t have this level of style and probably cost a lot more. You are an artist

    • Thanks so much for your kind words, Pamela. I’m really glad my daughter wanted the set … now I can look at it whenever I choose! LOL Thanks so much for stopping by today! Cynthia

    • Thank you, Suzanne. I’m really curious if I could have gotten the same finish with General Finishes? I’ve never used any of their whites … but winter is coming and sadly, my spraying days are numbered! Thanks for stopping by today! Cynthia

  5. Cynthia I am a huge fan of MCM. Those clean lines and sleek looks make me happy. Of course I don’t have any of that in Greece, I’ll have to wait till I get to the States for some of that. Love what you did here. The furniture looks modern and perfect for a girl’s room. And she can even carry it over into adulthood, it is that pretty and sophisticated. White never goes out of style.

    • Thank you for your kind words, Mary. You are always so supportive and positive. It’s appreciated! Cynthia

  6. This turned out terrific. I bet your daughter is thrilled with it. This is a set she can use for a long time.

  7. What a stunning transformation Cynthia. The finished dresser and side tables look so professional and the white, black and gold combination is a winner. I’m sure your daughter must be super impressed. So sorry to hear about Atticus though.

    • Thanks for your kind words, Michelle. And yes, my daughter is pleased with her “new” furniture … but of course now she wants new curtains and duvet. Go figure! 😀 Take care, Cynthia

  9. Beautiful! How long does it take this Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel in High Gloss to cure? I’ve used BM enamel which hardens really quickly (which I love), but it doesn’t level out to a silky smooth finish (which I don’t love).

    • Hi Vicki. Thanks for stopping by today. As you know, I sprayed the MCM furniture. It dried fairly quickly, and I gave it multiple thin coats. It leveled fine, and I’m pleased with the finish … although I did let it cure for almost two weeks. I want my daughter to enjoy this furniture for a long time, so there was no hurry. Take care, Cynthia

  10. Whoa, you totally transformed that piece! I love them both. Giving pieces new life is so much fun.

    • Thank you, Leslie, and I couldn’t agree more … it is so much fun! Especially when you get to keep the pieces ! 😀 Take care, Cynthia
